Coloured mulches are used and perform in the same way as naturally coloured mulches. However because many landscape designers and garden enthusiasts are looking for the impact of instant colour, coloured mulches are increasingly used for decorative applications. However British gardeners are still fairly conservative and in landscape applications have been more likely to accept an artificially coloured ‘red cedar’ mulch than some of the brighter colours. The brighter colours (for example, green, blue and yellow) are more likely to be used in specialised applications where high visual impact is required, or colour coordination is attractive, for example exhibitions.  Coloured mulches may be used in many domestic, retail, local authority or industrial situations where naturally coloured mulches are also used, but are more especially suited to:

  • Exotic landscaping schemes, for example Chinese or water gardens

  • Flower beds and borders to coordinate with hard landscaping fencing or the cladding of surrounding buildings

  • Tubs, planters and pots to match the pots, flowers or soft furnishings on the deck or patio

  • Around and under decking to match the decking colour finish Exhibitions and displays (indoor and outdoor)

  • Retail displays (garden centres)

  • Indoor landscaping

  • Corporate and club logos

Mulching is a vital aspect of garden maintenance and installation. Mulch is a cover to the soil using either organic or inorganic products. The depth of the mulch layer depends on the type of mulch being used, but as a rule 75mm should be the minimum. The advantages of mulching include:

·       Conserving existing soil moisture

·       Absorbing and retaining water from irrigation or rainfall

·       Providing protection against temperature fluctuations

·       Inhibiting weed growth

·       Providing a source of nutrients and improving soil structure.
